Oh boy, time for a big one … unlearning bad food habits.
This topic has more answers and drama than any one we tackle at This Midlife. There are thousands of posts touting new diets, food advice and “health” choices assaulting us every day.
We can start out with a little history. First off, understand that:
- Nutritional “science” and guidelines* have been driven largely by food companies for a century
- Generations of medical practitioners have been trained to believe those guidelines
So it is not your fault if you have ingested boxes of processed foods, chips, pastas, pizza and low fat meals you were either told were good for you or went into your mouth because they tasted great or were convenient.
It is on you, though, if you continue on this path, because the cycle of eating this way and then seeking quick fixes (those diets) or help from your doctor is going to get you more of the same, including the life sentences of prescriptions and accommodations that won’t cure, but instead usher you into the eventual disabilities like obesity, diabetes, circulation issues and dimentia.
It’s not easy unlearning bad food habits
The good news is that the human body is resilient, and you can fix yourself with the right assistance. It’s about choices (not mandates) and filtering out the chatter of advice, misinformation and money-driven paths to a new you. A few more facts here: A) It will cost more to eat better as organic vegetables and grass-fed choices are not subsidized like the factory farms and industrial meat industries B) It will take more time because the preparation/cooking required to get the best nutritional value does not include your typical grab-n-go or microwaves. C) You will need to supplement because even a healthy diet can’t completely overcome environmental pollutants and soils depleted of nutrients.
At This Midlife, we partner with the coaches and experts who have all experienced these dilemmas and more, AND constantly research better choices, methods and solutions for reversing the aging effects of poor diet. When you decide to book your assessment, we’ll discuss many of these options and recommend a professional(s) who can teach you, guide you and open up your eyes to what it means to feel much better as you begin to thrive.
As we have mentioned here, there are thousands of people and systems claiming to have your best interest in mind. We can promise a path of common sense, open minds and science-based guidance that works for you beyond what you eat and drink now, and on into your next 50 years of healthy living.
